ICU Services at Shaheed Sardar Mohammad Dawod khan  Hospital The ICU at Shaheed Sardar Mohammad Dawod khan  Hospital has been operational for the past fifteen years. Previously, it was known as the Recovery Room, where postoperative patients were cared for.

Now, the ICU is considered the heart of the hospital, providing critical care to severely ill patients from both internal and surgical wards, trauma patients, and those with complications referred from other hospitals. All invasive and non-invasive procedures are performed on patients in this unit. In 2008, a group of physicians was first trained in this department by foreign specialists, marking the beginning of their work in the ICU.

Subsequently, these doctors entered the Ministry of Public Health’s specialization program in the fields of critical care and emergency medicine. To date, three batches of specialists in these fields have graduated with honors. Currently, the ICU has three specialist trainers who are engaged in training young resident doctors and interns while also providing care to critically ill patients. It is noteworthy that Afghanistan’s first ICU, which was established and inaugurated, is the ICU of Shaheed Sardar Mohammad Dawod khan  Hospital.

The specialization program in these fields was also initiated here for the first time. This ICU operates with a standardized curriculum and up-to-date treatment protocols, ensuring that patient care is provided according to the latest medical standards. It is also worth mentioning that doctors from the Police Hospital, National Security Hospital, FMIC, and various regional civilian hospitals, including Nangarhar, have received training at this center, and this training process continues.
